Huge Hoops....Really?
So...I am at my local A&S Solar.  A lovely person who has been in for a long while, wants to create an Elizabethan, so she strolls in with a Hoop the size of my van and a bum roll that could double as a wait staff for 12.  Then proceeds to tell me she has a victorian corset so she does not need another one.....all the while giving me tips about how I should do a 14th Century Gothic Fitted Gown correctly.

Am I missing something?

Dear Lady...
We realize, fully, that you have a keyboard and are not afraid to use it.  Would that the same could be said of a synapse.

news flash
Fighting equipment (stolen or possibly so) are the kidnapped blonde girls of the SCA media outlets.

Clearly a lot of e-scadians spend hours each day on e-bay researching this stuff.

Maybe someday they'll find Jimmy Hoffa, too.

Snarking on myself...
Just realized I posted something that I feel, upon reflection, was inappropriate to the community.
Next time, I WILL wait five minutes before I hit "post".
My apologies. I deleted it.

A Cook's Snark
Hey, if you can pack a picnic lunch for your family of 4 for less than I can do a dayboard for 'em, I want a discount card like yours! I can't do a picnic lunch for *TWO* for $10!
And if you can take 'em out to dinner for less than I can cook a feast for them, bring me back a Big Mac, ok?

I agree that it's not ok when I do it. You know what that means? It means it's not ok when you do it either.

Not to distract from previous snarks... but WHY oh WHY am I reading an entire THREAD about how a meal, even a "period" feast will make people sick if there are no potatoes included...

Faire Playing to the Crowds and RPGs at Events

So this past An Tir/West War? I was faced with someone I wanted to slap silly, Those who know me? See this as a daily thing, however this guy was dressed as Periot or a Fool. He was not part of the Children's Ministry or An Tirs Pied Pipers. Yet he was attracting children to go from campsite to campsite and bother people, Until they gave them something. He was also found at one time sitting on the floor lamenting about some odd thing, I never did understand, Something I had done myself while working faire to bring in the patrons and bring them into the pagentry. However? I really don't think we need such in the SCA, yet when I attempted to speak to him about such he walked away. His friends claimed he was an "Artist" and an "Actor" so he was being extempore of his mother wit, witless else her son is what I paraphrase from the Bard. He also made me feel funny that he had quite a few kids with him? Yet was not really part of the festivities planned.

The other thing I was not liking was a VAmpire RPG happened during Saturday's meal time. It is wonderful and do you RPG or LARP,I just don't think it is appropriate for an SCA event, so many other things to do while at an event than to keep yourself segregated in a game, not involving the SCA.

Elizabeth the Movie and that Simplicity Pattern
I really enjoyed Hollywood's version of Elizabeth I's life. It was pretty nice I had a great time watching it! Who knew the lady who creates some of the BIG 3's patterns decided THAT pattern had to be given life! Now? To say some good things? Bum rolls and Spanish Farthingales for the basic populace (Oh so THAT is how you keep a dress out, not the HUGE Civil War hoop). But? I have seen so many of this pattern, with the exception of the fabrics the exact same gown. I mean? People have followed it faithfully, including the huge lace edging the overskirt....I could stand to never see this gown again. But I have seen it win costuming at Ren Faires (shudder).

I know when you don't know? HOw can you know, but still? Oy Vey!

Going back to my new Husqvarna Design SE, I have to put her to sleep!

period police
Yes I too can drive out a newcomer by pointing out inaccuracies in their (relatively accurate) first garb.

(and no I don't mean garb that more properly belongs in the privacy of a home or pleasure garden)
(met a lady last night who'd been driven out by such - and had finally been convinced to try again)

Ever After
First, let me say that I enjoyed Ever After. I liked the premise of re-telling the Cinderella story in a non-magical setting. I liked that the Prince and 'Cinderella' had a falling in love period, instead of the love at first sight thing that happens in the fairy tale.

However, it would have been better if set in a non-existent kingdom (à la The Princess Bride), instead of trying to fit it into an historical context.

There are a bunch of historical inaccuracies mentioned here, but I thought I'd add a couple of my own observations:
  • Even with the assumption that 16th C. French is being translated into modern English, which can be used to excuse some of the anachronistic expressions, there are some that just don't work. For example, Henry's line, "It is your mouth that has me hypnotized." The word 'hypnotize' was coined in 1843. The word 'hypnotic' dates from 1625, but even that didn't take on its current meaning of 'trance-inducing' until 1843. Better choices would have been 'enraptured', or 'enchanted', or the like.

  • Leonardo invented the kite? Really? I think not.

That said, surprisingly, the heraldry was reasonably well done.

movie time!
what is the worst movie you have ever seen - the one that made your little SCAdian heart gasp in horror?

Mine is and always be this little "gem" called "Arthur: The Young Warlord" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073244/} it was unbearably, horribly bad - the only reason I made myself watch it start to finish is because...I am an Arthurian nut. Kill me now.
